About the mosquito

Mosquitoes are the #1 reason summer evenings in North Carolina get cut short. Only the females bite — they need a blood meal to lay eggs — and they're most active at dawn and dusk. They breed in any standing water: gutters, plant saucers, bird baths, old tires, kid's toys. Beyond the itchy welts, they're vectors for West Nile virus, Zika, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, and dog heartworm. Eliminating standing water is the single highest-impact control step.

Quick ID

Slender 3–9 mm body with long proboscis and scaled wings.

In the Triangle

Triangle mosquito season runs roughly April through October; worst near creeks, ponds, and wooded areas.
