Most pest problems are cheaper, easier, and less stressful to prevent than to react to. Castle Exterminators' quarterly general pest control program is the most popular service we offer Durham homeowners — one recurring visit every 90 days protects your home against 30+ common pests including ants, roaches, spiders, earwigs, crickets, silverfish, ticks, wasps, millipedes, and centipedes.
The reason quarterly beats one-off treatments has to do with the pest life cycle and how NC weather drives it. Every 90 days, the pest pressure on a Durham home shifts: spring brings overwintering ants and carpenter ants foraging out of walls; summer brings roaches, wasps, ticks, and moisture-driven pests; fall drives crickets, spiders, stink bugs, and rodents indoors as temperatures drop; winter is when mice, silverfish, and dormant pests establish inside where it's warm.
A single treatment in April kills what's active in April — but it does nothing for the September ant colony budding under your deck or the November mouse looking for a way in.
Quarterly service is built around that cycle: our exterior barrier stays fresh, entry points get re-inspected every season, and we catch new activity before it becomes an infestation. It's the same approach the EPA recommends under Integrated Pest Management (IPM) — prevention first, monitoring second, targeted treatment only when needed, minimum-effective product choice always.
And because every home is different — square footage, lot size, distance from woods or water, prior pest history, pets, kids, and how you use the property all change the plan — every quarterly quote we issue is personalized after we walk the home. No flat rates.
How the quarterly program actually works
Step 1 — Free home walk-through. A licensed technician walks the interior (as much as you want us in), the exterior perimeter, garage, crawl space or basement, attic if accessible, and the yard's pest-relevant features (mulch beds, woodpiles, trash storage, downspouts, entry points). We identify current activity, conducive conditions, and likely-vulnerability points, and photograph anything material.
Step 2 — Personalized written quote. Based on home size, prior pest history, and any active issues we found, you get a written scope: what the initial visit will cover, what the quarterly maintenance visits look like, which pests are covered, and the guarantee terms. Personalized to your home. No flat rates.
Step 3 — Initial deep-clean treatment. The first visit is thorough — this is where we knock down whatever's currently active. We treat interior harborage (under sinks, behind appliances, baseboards, closets, garage), the exterior perimeter (foundation, eaves, windowsills, entry points), spider webs and wasp nests around the eaves, and any specific hotspots we found on the walk-through. Products used depend on what we found; roach hotspots get gel bait, ant trails get non-repellent liquid, spider harborage gets residual dust, etc.
Step 4 — Quarterly maintenance visits. Once every 90 days we return to refresh the exterior barrier, knock down new webs and wasp starts, re-inspect entry points, and check that the interior stays clean. Most quarterly visits are entirely exterior — no interior access needed unless we see an issue or you request it — which means most homeowners don't even need to be home. We text before we arrive and leave a service report after.
Step 5 — Free re-treatments between visits. This is where the program earns its reputation. If you see any covered pest between your scheduled quarterly visits, let us know — we come back and re-treat at no charge, no questions. Not "we'll add it to your next visit" — a dedicated return trip, usually within 1–2 business days.
What the program covers — and what it does not
Included (30+ common pests): ants (including carpenter ants exterior treatment), German and American roaches, house spiders, wolf spiders, orb weavers, brown recluse, earwigs, house crickets, camel crickets, silverfish, ticks (yard barrier), house wasps and paper wasps (accessible nests up to 15 feet), yellow jackets (accessible nests), millipedes, centipedes, pill bugs, springtails, stink bugs, ladybugs, boxelder bugs, clover mites, and dozens more common Durham nuisance pests.
Not included in the base program (available as add-ons or separate specialty services): termite control, rodents (mice and rats), mosquitoes, bed bugs, wildlife (squirrels, raccoons, snakes), crawl space encapsulation, brown recluse in-wall infestations, and honeybee removal (we refer to a local beekeeper).
Most homeowners who add rodent monitoring or mosquito service alongside the quarterly program get a bundle discount — we'll walk through the options with you during the initial quote so you're only paying for what you actually need.
What to expect on treatment day
Duration: The initial visit for most Durham homes runs 45 minutes to 90 minutes depending on square footage and current activity. Quarterly maintenance visits are typically shorter.
Access: The initial visit works best when we can access interior key areas — kitchen, bathrooms, garage, basement/crawl access, and any rooms where you've seen activity. Quarterly visits after that are usually 100% exterior.
Kids and pets: Products we use are EPA-registered and applied per label at residential-appropriate rates. For interior work, we ask you to keep kids and pets out of treated rooms until the products dry (typically 30–60 minutes). Exterior treatment has no re-entry period once dry.
Prep: None required for exterior-only quarterly visits. For the initial interior visit, we'll ask you to move pet food off the floor, clear under-sink cabinets if we're treating there, and put fish tank pumps on temporary shut-off (or cover the tank) if we're treating nearby.
Occupancy: You can absolutely stay home during the appointment. For exterior-only quarterly visits, most homeowners aren't even home.
Why quarterly beats one-off treatments and DIY
One-off treatments kill what's active today. They don't stop the next colony, don't maintain the exterior barrier, and don't catch the entry point that let the last pest in. In central NC, one-off pest work is almost always a "call again in 3 months when they're back" cycle.
DIY sprays and foggers have three problems. First, most consumer products are pyrethroid-based and mosquitoes/ants/roaches in the Southeast are widely resistant. Second, homeowner application rates are usually either dangerously high or ineffectively low — the label math is nontrivial. Third, DIY doesn't address conducive conditions (moisture, harborage, entry points) which is where 80% of the real fix actually is.
Quarterly IPM addresses the whole system. Prevention, monitoring, minimum-effective product, targeted application, and follow-up. Over a full year, it's almost always cheaper than DIY plus emergency callouts — and dramatically less stressful.
Why every quarterly quote is personalized
A 1,500-square-foot townhouse in downtown Durham with no yard is not the same job as a 3,800-square-foot home on a wooded acre in Chapel Hill with a workshop, a chicken coop, and a woodpile. Home size, lot features, distance from natural areas, prior pest history, whether you have pets or beehives, and how many current issues we need to knock down all move the number.
A flat "per treatment" rate would either overcharge small properties or under-serve big ones. We walk the property first, discuss what you actually need, and personalize the written quote — no obligation, no upsell pressure.
Common signs you need help
- Recurring seasonal pests (spring ants, summer roaches, fall spiders, winter rodents)
- A property near woods, fields, water, or a greenway
- A previous DIY approach that has not held for more than a few weeks
- Children, pets, or family members with allergies or sensitivity to sprays
- A home you want to protect long-term, not just react to
- A garage, basement, or crawl space that shows fresh activity every season
- A neighboring property with visible pest or trash issues
- A busy household where you want prevention handled without having to think about it
How Castle Exterminators handles it

Personalized written quote
Scope of work, pests covered, guarantee terms — all in writing, personalized to your home. No flat rates, no vague estimates.
Initial deep-clean treatment
Thorough first visit knocks down current activity inside and out. Product choice matched to what we found — gel bait for roaches, non-repellent liquid for ants, residual dust for spider harborage, etc.
Quarterly maintenance every 90 days
Return every 3 months to refresh the exterior barrier, knock down new webs and wasp starts, and re-check entry points. Most visits are 100% exterior; you don't need to be home.
Free re-treatments between visits
See a covered pest between your scheduled visits? We come back at no charge, usually within 1–2 business days. Not "next visit" — a dedicated return trip.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to sign a long-term contract?
No. Our quarterly program is month-to-month — cancel any time with no penalty. You only pay through the last completed treatment.
What pests are included?
Over 30 common pests including ants (interior + exterior carpenter ant exclusion), roaches, spiders, earwigs, crickets, silverfish, ticks (yard barrier), house wasps and paper wasps (accessible nests), yellow jackets, millipedes, centipedes, stink bugs, and boxelder bugs. Termites, rodents, mosquitoes, bed bugs, wildlife, and crawl space encapsulation are handled by separate specialty programs (often bundled at a discount).
How much does quarterly pest control cost?
Price depends on home size, lot features, prior pest history, and how many current issues we need to knock down on the initial visit. Rather than quote a flat per-treatment rate that would either overcharge small homes or under-serve big ones, we walk your property, discuss what you actually need, and put a personalized number on paper before you commit — free, no obligation.
Are the treatments safe for kids, pets, and beneficial insects?
Yes. We use EPA-registered products applied per label at residential-appropriate rates, and we practice Integrated Pest Management — minimum-effective product, targeted application, prevention before spraying. For interior treatments, we ask you to keep kids and pets out of treated rooms until the products dry (typically 30–60 minutes). Exterior treatment has no re-entry period once dry. If you keep chickens, beehives, or a pond with fish, tell us at the walk-through and we'll adjust product choices accordingly.
Do I need to be home for quarterly visits?
For the initial visit, ideally yes — that's when we're walking the interior and doing the first knockdown. For the quarterly maintenance visits after that, no — most are 100% exterior and most homeowners aren't home. We text before we arrive, and leave a written service report after.
Do you cover carpenter ants and carpenter bees?
Yes. Carpenter ant exterior treatment is included in the quarterly program (interior carpenter ant activity is treated on the initial visit and follow-ups as needed). Carpenter bee treatment is included seasonally (spring). If you have active structural damage from either, we'll flag it during the walk-through so you can decide whether repair work is also needed.
What happens if I see pests between quarterly visits?
Let us know. We come back and re-treat at no charge, usually within 1–2 business days — this isn't "we'll add it to your next visit," it's a dedicated return trip. If a specific pest keeps coming back after multiple re-treatments, that's a signal we need to adjust the plan (missed harborage, new entry point, neighbor property issue), and we'll do that at no additional cost.
What sets Castle Exterminators apart from big-box national pest companies?
We're family-owned in Durham since 2011, with 25+ years of combined pest control experience on our team. That means you talk to the same office and get the same technicians visit after visit, not a rotating cast of subcontractors. We're NC-licensed (#1979PW), insured through West Bend Mutual, 5.0 on Google, and we don't upsell services you don't need — the walk-through and quote are always free, and quarterly is month-to-month with no cancellation penalty.
