About the grasshopper
Grasshoppers are the familiar large jumping insects of meadows, lawns, and agricultural fields. They feed on a wide variety of plants — leaves, stems, flowers — and can cause significant damage to gardens and crops during outbreak years. They're not a household pest, but if you garden in the Triangle, knowing how to recognize them and protect young plants with row covers matters.
Quick ID
25–75 mm green or brown body, short antennae, very large jumping hind legs.
In the Triangle
Common in Triangle meadows, gardens, and farm edges; rarely a structural concern.
