Paper Wasp

Polistes spp.

Size
15–25 mm
Category
Stinging Insects

About the paper wasp

Paper wasps are less aggressive than yellow jackets — they typically only sting when their nest is threatened — but their sting is just as painful and can cause allergic reactions. They build the recognizable open umbrella-shaped paper nests under eaves, decks, branches, and inside light fixtures and grills. Early-season nests with just one or two queens can be knocked down safely; mature colonies need a licensed professional.

Quick ID

15–25 mm slender brown-yellow body; long legs dangle in flight.

In the Triangle

Common across Triangle porches, decks, and patios all summer; check under eaves before grilling season.
