Wolf Spider
Lycosidae family
About the wolf spider
Wolf spiders are the large hairy brown-grey spiders that startle you when they sprint across a basement floor or garage. They don't build webs — they're active hunters with excellent eyesight (a distinctive eye arrangement with two large forward-facing eyes). Females carry an egg sac attached to their spinnerets. Bites are uncommon and not medically significant, usually causing only localized redness and itching for 24 hours. Sealing cracks and reducing outdoor lighting helps keep them outside.
Quick ID
10–35 mm robust hairy brown-grey body; two large eyes facing forward; carries egg sac on spinnerets.
In the Triangle
Common throughout the Triangle, especially in basements, garages, mulched landscapes, and leaf litter.
