Acrobat Ant
Crematogaster spp.
About the acrobat ant
Acrobat ants get their name from their habit of raising their heart-shaped abdomen up over their head when alarmed. They nest in moist or damaged wood — often in old termite or carpenter ant galleries — and increasingly in foam insulation behind siding. They can bite mildly and emit a faint musky odor. While usually a nuisance pest, finding them inside your walls can signal underlying moisture damage worth investigating.
Quick ID
2.5–4 mm light brown to black with heart-shaped abdomen raised when disturbed.
In the Triangle
Occasional in Triangle homes, especially houses with EIFS / foam-insulated exteriors.
