About the pavement ant

Pavement ants are the small dark ants you see leaving little piles of soil at the cracks of sidewalks, driveways, and foundation slabs. They forage indoors aggressively for grease, sweets, and meats — basically anything they can carry back to the nest. They're also known for territorial 'ant wars' with rival colonies, sometimes leaving small piles of dead workers on pavement.

Quick ID

2.5–3 mm dark brown to black body with parallel grooves on head and thorax.

In the Triangle

Extremely common in Triangle driveways and foundations; one of the top reasons homeowners call about ants on patios.
