Raspberry Crazy Ant
Nylanderia fulva
About the raspberry crazy ant
Raspberry crazy ants are a Gulf-coast invasive species that has been steadily expanding north. They earn their name from the erratic, jerky way they run — no defined trails like other ants. They form massive supercolonies that displace native ant species and notoriously short-circuit electrical equipment by nesting inside outlets, breaker boxes, and HVAC units. They're not strongly attracted to typical ant baits, which makes them especially hard to control.
Quick ID
2–3 mm reddish-brown ant with long legs and antennae; moves erratically.
In the Triangle
Mostly a Gulf-coast pest; rare in the Triangle, but worth identifying if you see ants behaving unusually.
