Subterranean Termite
Reticulitermes spp.
About the subterranean termite
Subterranean termites are the most economically destructive wood-destroying pest in the United States — responsible for billions in damage annually. Colonies of millions live in the soil, building characteristic mud tubes from ground level up into the wood of homes, where they silently consume cellulose 24/7. By the time you see damage, significant structural loss has usually occurred. Annual professional inspection + soil termiticide barrier or baiting system is the standard of care in North Carolina.
Quick ID
3–10 mm cream-white workers; soldiers have darker heads and large mandibles. Mud tubes on foundations are the #1 sign.
In the Triangle
NC is in the high-pressure termite zone; the Triangle sees year-round termite activity.
